In fact, the United States and other imperialist powers have not only considered on several critical occasions using nuclear weapons to reverse military defeats. They have directly threatened to drop atom bombs in order to extract concessions from their enemies. 2/

Far less known and even more serious were the use of nuclear threats by President Nixon against the USSR and Vietnam. Operation Giant Lance was initiated on October 27, 1969, according to Wikipedia, to force a settlement of the Vietnam War on terms favorable to the US. 4

Nixon made use of what was referred to as the "madman" tactic to convince the Soviet Union that he was capable of ordering a nuclear strike. Another operation, related to Giant Lance, was "Duck Hook." 6/

Henry Kissinger, Nixon's criminal accomplice, told the president that the US had to be prepared to use nuclear weapons. In a memo to Nixon, Kissinger wrote: "To achieve its full effect on Hanoi's thinking, the action must be brutal." 9/

De hecho, Estados Unidos y otras potencias imperialistas no sólo han considerado en varias ocasiones críticas el uso de armas nucleares para revertir derrotas militares, sino que han amenazado directamente con lanzar bombas atómicas para obtener concesiones de sus enemigos.
Las exigencias del general Douglas MacArthur de lanzar bombas nucleares sobre China, el hecho de que el presidente Eisenhower sopesara la petición de Francia de detonar dispositivos nucleares en Dien Bien Phu, y las amenazas del presidente Kennedy durante la crisis de los misiles en Cuba...todo ello está bien documentado.
Mucho menos conocidas e incluso y más graves fueron las amenazas nucleares del presidente Nixon contra la URSS y Vietnam. La Operación Giant Lance se inició el 27 de octubre de 1969, según la Wikipedia, para forzar una solución a la guerra de Vietnam en términos favorables para Estados Unidos.
Según Wikipedia, Nixon "autorizó a un escuadrón de 18 bombarderos B-52 a patrullar los casquetes polares del Ártico y a intensificar la amenaza nuclear... para coaccionar tanto a la Unión Soviética como a Vietnam del Norte a acordar términos favorables con los EE.UU., y terminar de forma concluyente la Guerra de Vietnam".
Nixon hizo uso de lo que se denominó la táctica del 'loco' para convencer a la Unión Soviética de que era capaz de ordenar un ataque nuclear. Otra operación, relacionada con Giant Lance, fue 'Duck Hook'.
Su objetivo era forzar a Vietnam del Norte, mediante la amenaza de un ataque nuclear masivo, a aceptar las condiciones de Estados Unidos para terminar la guerra. Wikipedia afirma que Duck Hook pidió el bombardeo nuclear de objetivos militares en todo Vietnam del Norte. Esto incluía "el bombardeo de saturación de Hanoi y Haiphong, el bombardeo de diques para destruir el suministro de alimentos de gran parte de la población de Vietnam del Norte, ataques aéreos contra la línea de comunicaciones del noreste de Vietnam del Norte, así como pasos y puentes en la frontera china ..."
Henry Kissinger, el cómplice criminal de Nixon, le dijo al presidente que Estados Unidos tenía que estar preparado para usar armas nucleares. En un memorando a Nixon, Kissinger escribió: 'Para lograr su pleno efecto en el pensamiento de Hanoi, la acción debe ser brutal'.
Finalmente, debido a las dudas sobre su eficacia estratégica y al temor a una violenta reacción popular, Duck Hook no se aplicó. Pero Nixon siguió amenazando a Vietnam y a la Unión Soviética con una guerra nuclear.
Esta historia demuestra que 1) las afirmaciones de que Putin está rompiendo un tabú hasta ahora incuestionable sobre el uso de armas nucleares son fraudulentas; y 2) que EE.UU., si se enfrentara a la perspectiva de una derrota militar, sin duda recurriría a la guerra nuclear.
Sabiendo que EE.UU. utilizaría armas nucleares si se enfrentara a una situación militar desesperada, los incesantes esfuerzos de la administración Biden por arrinconar a Putin y forzar su capitulación son totalmente temerarios.
